Description

Gatcombe Court is a court or manor house dating from the late 14th to 15th century, with alterations made in the mid to late 17th century and the 20th century. The building is constructed of rubble with freestone dressings and features double Roman tiled roofs at different levels, along with rendered diagonal stacks. It has two storeys and attics in two steep gables with ball finials on the left (west) side.

The south elevation has four bays, with the gable end of the east wing visible at the far right. On the ground floor, there are two canted bay windows with 1930s glazing bar sashes to the left, an off-centre projecting square ashlar porch with a moulded cornice and a 19th-century panelled and glazed door, and to the right, a 17th-century bay window with one large light flanked by three smaller lights, featuring ovolo moulded mullions, transoms, and surrounds. The first floor has two-light cross windows to the left beneath a continuous string course, and to the right, there are two glazing bar sash windows, with additional two-light cross windows in the attic.

The west elevation consists of two bays on the left, featuring four- and three-light casement windows with ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds, along with decorative iron catches. To the right, there is a lozenge and square panelled door in a moulded frame. At the far right is the projecting gable end of a medieval wing, which includes the remains of a two-light window with cusped ogee heads under a square dripmould in the re-entrant wall, and a three-light window with hollow chamfered mullions and cusped ogee heads under a square dripmould in the gable end wall.

Inside, the rear (north-east) room features remains of an ashlar fireplace with an ogee-hollow moulded lintel and jamb, and a pointed vaulted plaster ceiling in the chamber above. The main part of the house includes an open well staircase dated 1683, which has a closed and moulded string, turned balusters, and acorn finials. Nearby is a studded and panelled door dated 1664.
