Description

Mill Farmhouse is probably of late mediaeval origin, with remodelling occurring in the late 16th and early 17th centuries and again in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with a pantile roof and has rubble stacks. It has two storeys and originally five bays, now featuring 2- and 3-light casement windows from the 19th and 20th centuries. A projecting, gabled wing of two storeys is positioned off-centre. A plank door is located on the right side within a single-storey, 20th-century lean-to. A projecting stair tower is at the rear.

Inside, the kitchen contains a fireplace with a chamfered lintel. The parlour boasts stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and a large ashlar fire surround with a double ogee-moulded left jamb, a chamfered lintel, and a coved and moulded mantelshelf. A winder stair is present, with a chamfered surround and 4-centred head to the doorway at its foot. A similar doorway leads to a first-floor room in the projecting wing, also featuring an ashlar fire surround with a chamfered 4-centred head. Fragments of black painted decoration, depicting three veined leaves bunched together, survive on the rear of this fireplace. The collar-beam truss in the parlour chamber’s roof shows evidence of previously removed arch-braces.
