Description
The Barracks on Steepholm Island, dated 1867, is a Grade II listed building. It is constructed from limestone rubble with dressed quoins and has a slate roof. The structure consists of two blocks with brick infill between them. The larger western block is a long single-storey range featuring six segmental-headed windows and three doors, all with granite keystones, except for the westernmost door, which has a fanlight and a keystone that is inscribed with the date 1867 and "VR" underneath. Most of the windows are partly blocked, while others have modern glazing. The building has end stacks with cornices and string courses, as well as raised verges with kneelers. Original glazing bar sash windows can be found at the rear.
Inside, there is a plain long open room that was originally subdivided at the east end, where a stone flag floor still exists. There are two finely rubbed thin brick round-headed fireplaces. Attached to the main building is a shorter eastern block, also single-storey, with two windows and a central door, sharing the same features as the longer block. The Barracks is included in the listing for its military history significance and is part of the fort group.
