Description

Tombstone Battery, built between 1866 and 1868, is located on Steepholm Island and was constructed as part of the Palmerston forts, often referred to as "follies." This single battery features one barbette and is enclosed by a semi-circular parapet wall made of squared dressed rubble, with an outer ramp constructed from earth and stone. Inside, there is a pit that holds the remains of a Georgian III cannon and a displaced 7-ton, 7-inch cannon from the 1860s. The ammunition chamber has a dressed limestone exterior and a brick vaulted interior. For further details, refer to J.M. Barret's work, "Maritime Forts in the Bristol Channel."
