Description

The Garden Battery on Steepholm Island was built between 1866 and 1868 as part of the Palmerston forts, often referred to as "follies." Originally, it featured a double enclosure with two pits, but during World War II, a battery was constructed on top of pit 1. Pit 2 retains a semi-circular parapet wall made of limestone rubble on the inside, with an earth and stone bank on the outside. Notable surviving features include the racer, the remains of a cannon pivot from a George III cannon, and a displaced 7-ton 7-inch gun. For further details, see J.M. Barrett's "Maritime Forts in the Bristol Channel."
