Description
Birnbeck Pier is a significant structure that connects Birnbeck Island to the mainland, located below the Prince Consort Gardens. It was dated 1862 and officially opened in 1867, designed by Eugenius Birch. The pier features ironwork produced by the Isca Foundry of Newport, Gwent. It has iron girder piers with cross girders on the sides of the deck. The deck is supported by tubular iron legs that are outwardly splayed, grouped in fours, and connected by braces. A wooden deck is bordered by continuous cantilevered seating, which has curved open-work backs, handrails, and swan-neck stanchions. Small bays extend out at intervals along the sides of the pier, which also includes cast iron lamp standards positioned along its length.
