Description

Summit Battery is a 19th-century military structure located on Steepholm Island, built between 1866 and 1868 as part of the Palmerston forts. The battery originally featured a double enclosure, with the first enclosure remaining largely intact. It includes a semi-circular parapet wall made of squared dressed limestone on the inside of the barbette, and an outer ramp constructed of earth and stone. The site preserves a racer and a cannon pivot, including the remains of a George III cannon and a 7-ton 7-inch cannon. Nearby, there is an ammunition chamber for both batteries, which has a squared, dressed limestone exterior and a brick-lined, vaulted interior. For further details, refer to J.M. Barret's work on maritime forts in the Bristol Channel.
