Description

The Butchers Arms is an inn, now functioning as a public house, dated 1737 but with significant 19th-century work and 20th-century modifications. The building is primarily constructed of rendered rubble and features a roof of pantiles or double Roman tiles. It has a complex layout that forms a U-shape, with an open courtyard on the north side.

The original range is located at the back and has a date stone inscribed DSI or DSL 1737 positioned between the first-floor windows. This original section is accompanied by a forward-projecting wing on the right, a long service wing on the left, and a single-storey stable or outbuilding at the forward left. The two-storey right-hand wing has a plain gable with a stack facing the courtyard, which features 12-pane over 16-pane sash windows and a door in the internal corner that shares a hipped hood with a panelled door leading to the return wing.

The outer face of the building includes a flat-roofed, one-storey 20th-century block with a door facing Chapel Barton. The back of the early range has three 2-light glazing bar casements on each level, along with a projecting single-storey brick wing that is not of special interest. The long wing extends the 1737 block beyond a former gable stack and features a flight of external steps leading up to a loft entry under a raking canopy. The back of this range has three large 20-pane 19th-century sashes on the upper level. The stable wing includes a central stable door with an overlight, as well as garage doors. The right-hand wing has a cellar. Despite the considerable changes in the area, the building retains much of its historic exterior. The interior has not been inspected.
