Description
This is a house dating back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the early 18th century and further changes in the 20th century. The exterior is whitewashed rubble with a pantiled roof, featuring a gable stack on the right-hand side and a ridge stack where the roof levels change. The house is two stories high and comprises two distinct parts. The left-hand section has two windows, all 2-light casements that were added in the 20th century, plus a small single-light window under the eaves to the right. A 1 1/2-story lean-to extension projects from the left side, also featuring a 2-light casement. The right-hand section has a 2-light casement at ground floor level and another under the eaves, with a higher roofline. On the left return, a rear wing is formed by a lean-to extension; the access is via a 20th-century door with sidelights, accompanied by a 2-light casement to the left. The rear of the left-hand section exhibits a staircase bulge on the right side. The interior was not inspected in March 1985, but a previous listing description from August 1978 mentioned a winder staircase positioned against a stack in the left-hand section. The house is of group value as the birthplace of John Whiting, a significant early Quaker, born in 1656 and died in 1722, with this historical association considered to be the principal reason for its inclusion on the register.
