Description

The Chalet is a villa built in 1862 and later remodelled and extended in 1888 by Hans Price and Wooler of Weston-super-Mare for Hans Price. It is constructed of rough-faced limestone in a randomly coursed pattern and features a gabled Welsh slate roof with stone stacks that have moulded cornicing and original pots. The building has a linear central stairhall plan with a narrower service range at the rear and is designed in the Swiss Chalet style.

It stands two storeys high with a six-bay front elevation that has a fenestration arrangement of 3:1:2, including a central gabled bay. To the left of centre is an arched doorway with voussoirs. The wide eaves are cantilevered out on carved brackets and adorned with fret-cut bargeboards. There is a trellised balcony supported by arch-braced posts with turned finials. The windows include 2/2-pane sashes in the central canted bay window, while other windows have shutters. The canted bay on the right has a cornice that brackets out to the balcony, and to the left is a full-height mullioned and transomed bay window topped with a gablet. Flat and segmental stone arches are present over plate-glass and glazing-bar sashes on other elevations.

Inside, the villa retains complete interiors from 1888, including a panelled dining room with a strapwork ceiling and stained glass windows, an inglenook fireplace, and a bay window. There is also a turned-baluster staircase and a drawing room in the Queen Anne style featuring a strapwork ceiling, embossed panelling, and a bracketed balcony leading to a conservatory that has putti to a fountain. The Chalet is a fine example of a late Victorian building in the Swiss Chalet style.
