Description
The Woodspring District Council Offices, which houses the Housing Services Department, is a large Gothic building from the mid-19th century located on a hillside above Highdale Hill. The building features a two-storey ashlar front with a gabled range that projects forward on the right and another gabled range set back slightly to the left of the porch. To the left of the front, there is a three-storey extension. Architectural details include cornices, parapets, and some gargoyles, along with a tall chimney stack on the right and carved finials at the gable ends.
On the right side, there is a five-light splayed bay that extends through both storeys. The cornice is adorned with grotesques and has a crenellated parapet. The stone mullions and transoms support cusped lights, with shields in quatrefoils positioned between the storeys. Most of the other windows are three-light with pointed heads and stone mullions, featuring rectangular dripmoulds at the ground floor.
The central two-storey porch has diagonal buttresses and a pointed doorway beneath a rectangular dripmould, which is complemented by carved spandrels. Additionally, there is a two-storey canted bay in the extension to the left. The building is part of a group that includes No 5, the White House, Nos 11 to 15 (odd), the Woodspring District Offices, and Christ Church Chapel Hill.
