Description

Numbers 9 to 21 and boundary walls and gate piers to Woodhill Road form a mid-19th century terrace extension to Adelaide Terrace, likely built in the 1840s or 1850s and executed in a Jacobean Revival style. The buildings are two storeys with an attic and basement. They are constructed from local random rubble with ashlar dressings. The terrace comprises two bays, with the right-hand bays featuring high, shaped gables above attic windows. Four buildings retain pierced finials, and the parapets between the gables have a short cornice below, ending in carved masks. Each house is separated by a grooved pilaster strip topped with a crude cap, above which sits a chimney stack with a moulded capping. The windows are mostly glazing bar sash windows; attic windows are plate glass, while first-floor windows have a rounded cornice to the lintels. Ground-floor windows are round-headed with marginal glazing, and are French casement types. Arched doorcases feature panelled spandrels, with set-back doorways and fanlights, and husk-type area railings. Stone boundary walls have shaped caps to the gate piers. Roofs have been altered and are now covered with modern tiles, replacing the original slate. The rear of the terrace is two storeys with a full basement, and the left-hand bay features a full-height angled bay with a hipped roof.
