Description
Combe Lodge is a lodge built around the 1840s, constructed primarily of limestone ashlar with sandstone turrets. The roof is hidden behind embattled parapets and features a moulded stringcourse. Designed in a Perpendicular Gothic style, the building has two storeys and is arranged in a 1:2:1 bay configuration, with 2-light windows that have cusped ogee heads and quatrefoils above. The central entrance features a large 4-centred archway with quatrefoils in the spandrels. There are polygonal projecting turrets at the ends and between the bays, each containing a 2-light cusped lancet window along with blank quatrefoil and cross-loop windows, all topped with embattled parapets. The central area displays the armorial bearings of Smyth, of Ashton Court. The panelled doors have 4-centre headed surrounds set in the responds of the arch. Inside, there is a newel stone staircase and a winder stair featuring an elaborate cast-iron balustrade. A room to the right includes a Gothic freestone fireplace with a 4-centred head.
