Description

The former Boys School and Old School House, built in 1856 for William Gibbs of Barrow Gurney, is now disused. It features coursed rubble with freestone dressings and a slate roof characterized by coped raised verges and finials, along with rubble and ashlar stacks. Designed in a free Tudor Gothic style, the school room on the south side has two bays and includes a gabled projecting porch with angle buttresses. The porch has a plank door with strap hinges and a moulded surround with a 4-centred head. To the left of the porch is a three-light cross window with ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds, while to the right is a single-storey section with a six-light king-mullion window. The south-east gable end features angle buttresses and a four-light cross window with ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds, topped by a square dripmould with carved head stops and a pierced quatrefoil light above. The school house, located to the north-west, projects as a gabled cross wing and is two storeys high. It has a 1:2:1 light bay window with ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds, a pierced parapet, and a continuous string course over the ground floor. There is a projecting section to the right with a plank door in a moulded surround featuring a 4-centred head. The symmetrical north-west elevation has three bays, with the centre bay advanced and each bay topped by a steep coped gable. The ground floor has three-light cross windows, while the first floor features two-light casements.
