Description

A range of barns and farm buildings, likely dating back to the 15th or 16th century, with a stable probably from the 17th century, and later additions and alterations. The buildings are constructed of limestone rubble, with a pantiled roof to the barn’s right gable, raised coped verges, and C20 blockwork to the rear of the stable. The arrangement forms a U-shaped farmyard. The barn has a stable wing to the front left and shelter sheds to the front right. The barn’s central cart entry has a weathered buttress to the right. A lean-to is present to the left, with a door, and another to the right. The rear of the barn has a projecting cart entry with a hipped roof, large limestone quoins, a weathered buttress to the left, and a timber lintel marking a former opening. A lean-to set in the angle with the stable block to the right has a small opening with a timber lintel, and a C20 lean-to in blockwork replaces former rear bays of the stable. The right return of the barn shows a line of roof raising, and a C20 lean-to. The left return also reveals the line of a former stable at the gable end. The attached stable on the front left has its roof extended to cover lean-tos on each side; its gable end features a window and a door, both with timber lintels, and a small addition is attached to the inner side. The single-storey shelter shed attached to the front right has three open bays to the left, two doors, and a two-light casement to the right on the inner side, with a blank gable end, a two-light C20 window, and a door on the outer side. Inside the barn, the roof has six bays with principal rafters, collars, two rows of purlins, a raised roof level above the trusses, some later timbers, and one C20 truss. A later cart entry with a steel lintel is in the right return gable end. The stable interior retains two bays of roof with principal rafters, two rows of purlins, a ridge purlin, and a plated yoke. Claverham Court Farmhouse was the court house for one of the four tithings of Yatton, Claverham, Wick, Cleeve, and Yatton; the main barn range was probably originally a tithe barn.
