Description

The gatehouse and attached wall to the northeast of Tresco Abbey were built in 1843 for Augustus Smith. The structure is made of roughly coursed granite rubble and features slate roofs, designed in a picturesque Gothic style. It has an L-shaped plan, with an entrance that includes a rear lean-to extending to the back of a two-storey tower on the left. To the right, a lower two-storey block projects at right angles to the front. The entrance has plank double doors set in a four-centred arch, with corbelling beneath the parapet. The tower on the left has small windows set in a raised parapet topped with a pyramidal roof. The block on the right has a flight of steps leading to a plank door on the first floor, also set in a four-centred arch. The interior has not been inspected. Additionally, a granite rubble wall extends approximately 40 meters to the southeast towards Tresco Abbey, serving as a revetment wall between the raised entrance court of the house and a lane to the north.
