Description

The Smith Monument on Abbey Hill is a monument built in 1872. It is a rough granite rubble obelisk that stands about 15 feet high, set on a base that measures approximately 8 feet square. The monument features plaques dedicated to Augustus Smith, who died in 1872 and served as Lord Proprietor of the Isles of Scilly for 39 years, and Thomas Algernon Dorrien Smith, who was Lord Proprietor from 1872 to 1918. One of the plaques reads: "He devoted his life unselfishly to those Islands and added greatly to their beauty."
