Description
Hugh House was built in 1792 as an Officer's Mess and is now used as offices. The building is constructed from roughly coursed granite rubble, with the front above the ground floor made of granite ashlar. The side walls are slate-hung, and it features a gabled slate roof with granite end stacks. The layout is a double-depth plan with a central stairhall. It stands three storeys high and has a symmetrical five-window range, with the central bays slightly recessed. The ground floor has keyed lintels above horned 3/6-pane sash windows, while the first and second floors have wedge lintels over 6/6-pane sash windows. A mid-20th century pedimented doorway is also present. Inside, the building has been remodelled in the 20th century but still retains 19th-century panelled doors set in panelled reveals with moulded wood architraves. Originally built as an Officer's Mess for the Garrison, it later became the first residence of Augustus Smith, Lord Proprietor of the Islands, before he moved to Tresco Abbey.
