Description
The Forge is an 18th-century house that has been converted into an outbuilding. It is constructed from roughly coursed granite rubble and features a gabled pantile roof with granite end stacks. Originally designed as a two-unit plan, it is a single-storey building with a two-window range. The central doorway and the flanking windows have granite lintels, and there is a granite lintel over a window to the right of the central rear. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a timber lintel. The layout suggests that the house was divided into two rooms, and the off-centre position of the rear window indicates that it did not follow the central-staircase plan typical of the 19th century. This building is a rare surviving example of a single-storey dwelling, a style that was once common on the islands before the 19th century brought higher living standards.
