Description

Woolpack Batteries are two military structures built in 1901, made of concrete. Each battery has a rectangular shape with rounded corners and is surrounded by a deep ditch. They feature two gun positions on top of a large earthwork, along with a concrete structure that contains magazines. The batteries have iron loopholes and gates, which are loopholed and made of 1.5cm armour plating. These batteries were part of an unsuccessful plan to convert the islands into a fleet anchorage, but the shallow waters surrounding the islands would have made it impossible to create a counterpart to Scapa Flow.
