Description
West Woodyates Manor is a manor house, likely dating back to the 17th century or earlier, with significant remodelling in the early 18th century and further alterations and extensions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The 18th-century work was probably commissioned by Lord Londonderry. The building is constructed of flint and rubble walls, with some areas rendered, and ashlar dressings. It has tiled roofs and ashlar and brick stacks. The original 18th-century facade was symmetrical, and it now stands as a five-bay building with a two-story bow added in the 19th century to the right side. An eaves parapet features a moulded cornice. The windows are twelve-pane sashes set within square heads with keystones. The central upper floor window is distinguished by a moulded architrave. Bull’s eye windows are located in the outer bays on each storey. There are hipped dormers to the roof. A central rusticated doorcase contains a panelled door.
Internal features documented by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (RCHM) include an open fireplace with a chamfered bressummer, rounded shoulders, and a raised centre, found in a southwest ground floor room. This room is also lined with 17th-century panelling. One upper floor room contains a moulded stone fireplace surround with a rounded head, and another has an 18th-century fireplace with a bolection moulded surround.
