Description
The group of four Goddard monuments, located in the churchyard immediately south of the chancel of St Rumbold's Church in Pentridge, dates from 1774 to 1797. These monuments are made of stone and consist of two upright stones and two table tombs. The two stones are similar in design and are set against the chancel wall. Each stone features round panels for inscriptions, adorned with cherubs and stylised suns, with the letters "IHS" inscribed above. Foliage carvings flank either side of the panels, and the lettering is in round, lower case and gothic script, dedicated to William and Mary Goddard.
The westernmost table tomb has a moulded plinth and top with baluster ends, and it features double oval panels framed with guilloche. It is particularly noted for its finely carved knotted ribbon decoration, with lettering in lower case copperplate, dedicated to William Goddard.
The easternmost table tomb also has a moulded top and plinth, featuring an oval panel for an inscription. This central panel is flanked by subsidiary rectangular panels that contain lozenges and carved rays radiating from the corners, with upper and lower case round lettering, dedicated to Jane Goddard.
