Description
Pentridge House is a rectory, now a private house, dating from the early 19th century. The building is rendered and whitewashed, featuring tiled roofs and end brick stacks. It consists of two parallel ranges and is symmetrical, with two storeys and attics, and three bays. The windows are 12-pane sashes, and the ground floor includes two canted bays. The central entrance has a part-glazed door framed by a moulded, lugged architrave and a flat hood supported by brackets.
Inside, some rooms retain original joinery, including a round-headed niche with shaped shelves. The staircase features vase-and-column balusters, Tuscan newel-posts, and scroll spandrels.
It is reputed that Thomas Hardy, the poet and novelist, lived in the house at one time.
