Description

Laurel Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 18th or early 19th century, situated on Silver Street in Sutton Poyntz. Originally marked on Ordnance Survey maps as The Laurels, it is a long, single-depth cottage with a smaller, rear wing beneath a swept-down roof. The cottage is constructed of rubble with a thatched roof. The front elevation has two storeys and four windows, all deep two-light casements with horizontal glazing bars, set within eyebrow dormers on the first floor. An additional window is located to the left on the ground floor. A 20th-century plank door is set beneath a thatched hood, slightly offset beneath the third window. Four low buttresses with square tops are built against the front wall, and this wall appears to have been raised in later work from the upper window sill level. A lean-to with a plank door is positioned at the right-hand end, with a brick gable stack to the right and a smaller stack to the left of the door. The left return side features a two-light casement at each level, and the rear elevation has four two-light casements on the ground floor, plus a small, rendered section beneath the swept-down roof. The interior has been modified, but retains features typical of vernacular cottages in the village.
