Description

A barn range and wall, likely dating from the early 19th century with later additions, are situated south-east of Number 106 Northdown Farmhouse. The barn range is constructed of rubble and has a patent clay tile roof. Western extensions are built with rubble, English bond brickwork, and have a slate roof. Timber posts with plank panels and doors are also present. The barn is long and narrow, with an L-shaped range to the rear and a lean-to section covering approximately two-thirds of the west front, facing the farmhouse. A small stable with a plank door and a two-light casement window is located at the left end. The main lean-to has a wide pair of doors, followed by five bays containing posts on stone bases, filled with doors and panels, and a long ventilating slot above. To the right, the main barn features doors of vertical boarding reaching eaves height. Internally, the barn comprises twelve very narrow bays with lightweight propped collar trusses; there are no purlins or rafters, with the tiles running directly to large battens. The two northernmost bays are partitioned off by a full-height rubble wall. A stone wall connects the barn to the farmhouse, running forward from its north end.
