Description
The Sailors Return Public House is a late 18th-century building that has undergone mid-19th-century alterations. Originally two houses, it is now a public house located on St Nicholas Street in Weymouth. The structure is rendered over brick and rubble, topped with slate roofs and rendered stacks. It is a corner building facing south across the Inner Harbour, featuring rear wings that extend at right angles to the main single-depth range. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a four-window front.
The façade facing the quay includes two-light gabled dormers and mid to late 19th-century tripartite and 2/2-pane sash windows. Number 2 features a 19th-century flush panel door flanked by large six-pane lights set in a pilaster surround with a cornice. Number 1 has a four-panel flush 19th-century door beneath a transom light. The outer end of the building is gabled, while the corner is hipped. The return elevations and the 19th-century rear wings of Number 2 have similar window styles.
Inside Number 2, there is late 18th-century joinery, partitions, a chinoiserie balustrade on the staircase, and neo-classical style chimneypieces. This building is a prominent feature in the historic streetscape, especially when viewed from across the Inner Harbour.
