Description

Granary Quay is a former warehouse, now converted into apartments, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed and squared Portland stone and features a slate roof. The building is large, with frontages to North Quay, St Nicholas Street, and Lower St Edmund Street.

On the quay front, the structure rises four storeys and includes three windows and one doorway on each of the top three floors, all fitted with 20th-century casements that have two lights, set into original segmental voussoir heads with stone sills. The third bay features 20th-century glazed doors in the former loading bays, accompanied by a balcony and a slight iron balustrade. The ground floor has two doorways with segmental heads and, to the right, a wide garage door. The full-width haunched coped gable includes a small oculus and a string course below the kneelers.

The return to St Nicholas Street showcases three sets of two-light casements, similar to the quay front, and at the ground floor, there is a square opening and two lights with flush voussoirs. The Lower St Edmund Street front consists of three bays with deep-set casements under segmental heads and small balconies. The ground floor features a square-headed opening with a pair of doors. The roof is hipped at this end, leading to a plain eaves.

The interior was not inspected. Originally a grain warehouse, an early 20th-century photograph shows the building in a neglected state, covered in various advertisement hoardings. It was carefully restored in the late 20th century, along with the adjoining No.2, and converted into apartments, revitalizing a part of the harbour frontage that was at risk of decline. A plaque from the Weymouth Civic Society recognizes the significance of this conservation effort.
