Description

Post Green House is a country house located in Lytchett Minster, originally built in the mid to late 18th century as a house that now serves as a service range. It was enlarged in the early 19th century to create a double-pile house. The building features brick walls and a hipped slate roof with a parapet on the south front, along with brick end stacks.

The current entrance front, facing north, is two storeys high and includes a part-glazed door framed by a classical surround with fluted pilasters and an entablature that supports an open pediment. Above the door is a semi-circular fanlight with traceries. The ground floor has four double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, while the first floor has five similar windows. The second floor features five casement windows, also with glazing bars. A brick dentil cornice runs along the eaves.

The garden front, which was formerly the entrance front, is also two storeys tall. It has a parapet with plain coping and a simple moulded cornice, with canted bays at each end. In the centre, there are glazed doors with sidelights, and on the first floor, a double-hung sash window with glazing bars is set under a gauged arch with a projecting keystone. Each bay on the ground floor has three pairs of French doors with glazing bars and three double-hung sash windows above, as previously described. A later 19th-century ornamental iron verandah with a concave glass roof adds to the character of the house.

To the west of the main house is an attached service range that has one storey and an attic, constructed of brick with a slate roof. This section has altered windows and features a projecting bay on the south side with a balcony above, as well as pedimented dormers in the attic. Further west, there is an additional single-storey service range, and lean-to outbuildings are located at the east end of the house.

Inside, the drawing room is octagonal and boasts an enriched cornice and a carved marble fireplace surround. The dining room also has an enriched cornice and a niche with a contemporary painting in a half-dome. The room above the drawing room features a moulded cornice and a contemporary chimney piece, while the room above the dining room has an enriched acanthus cornice. The staircase is a cut string design with shaped spandrel brackets, and there is a shallow dome over the stairwell. The house is reputed to have originally served as a post house inn.
