Description
The White House is a detached house built around 1840 in a garden setting. It is constructed of stone walls, which have been stuccoed and painted. The roof is slate, with stone gable copings that have been rendered and painted, and rendered and painted chimney stacks at the gable ends. The house has a rectangular plan with parallel ridges. It is two storeys high with three windows on the front elevation, featuring two large, rounded bay windows on either side of the front door. The bay windows contain sash windows with 2-, 3-, and 2-light panes and thin glazing-bars. Fluted and reeded pilasters separate the window panes, and the curved frames of the sashes mirror the curvature of the wall. There is a sash window above the front door. The front door consists of six fielded panels, which are a 20th-century addition. A bracketed canopy and a rectangular fan light, also 20th-century, are above the front door. A western extension to the house incorporates a hipped slate roof and a sash window with thin glazing-bars in its end wall, dating to the 19th century. Inside, a central hall features a staircase with a Roman Doric newel, plain stick balusters, and plain handrails, all dating to the 19th century. Reeded cornices are present in the hall and on the landing.
