Description
Nos 4 and 5 Turnerspuddle are two cottages that were originally one house, built in the 17th century. The structure features a three-room and cross-passage plan, with walls made of both brick and plastered cob, topped by a thatched roof and brick stacks. The building is one storey high with attics.
No. 4 includes the original kitchen, cross-passage, and hall. It has a central ledged door, ground floor casement windows with cast iron lights, and attic half-dormers with casements that have glazing bars. Inside, the original kitchen boasts a large open fireplace with a timber lintel, while the former cross-passage now contains stairs. The hall features a stone fireplace with a shaped oak lintel and a chamfered ceiling beam.
No. 5, which was the original parlour block, has a ledged door and ground floor casement window with cast iron lights, along with an attic half-dormer with casements. The parlour retains a large open fireplace with a shaped timber lintel, one deeply chamfered ceiling beam, and another with smaller stopped chamfers. This building is a good example of its type.
