Description
Brockhill House is a detached house dating back to the 17th century, with additions made in the 18th century. The house is constructed of cob walls, now faced with brick, and has a thatched roof with brick stacks. It is a one-storey building with attics. A single-storey lean-to extension is at the rear, with the thatch roof extending over it. The original part of the house was built in a simple end-hall plan, featuring a central cross-passage. The hall is to the north and the kitchen to the south of this central passage. A later extension was added to the south of the kitchen, probably originally used as a dairy or similar space.
A modern brick and timber porch with an oak door now provides access. The ground floor has four casement windows with glazing bars. Four half-dormers with casements and glazing bars light the attic. There is also a ledged door leading to the former dairy.
Inside, the hall features a large open fireplace with a timber lintel and jambs, which backs onto the cross-passage. A chamfered oak ceiling beam and exposed joists are visible. The staircase is now located in the rear part of the cross-passage. The original kitchen has a stack in the end wall, a large open fireplace with a timber lintel and jambs, a chamfered oak ceiling beam, and exposed joists. The later dairy also has chamfered ceiling beams. A room above the hall contains a fireplace with a timber lintel and jambs.
The house is particularly noteworthy for its plan, which represents a transition between the earlier end-hall design and the later, more symmetrical two-room layout.
