Description

A terrace of six houses at 8-13 Hope Street, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. The houses are built of broadmayne brick in Flemish bond, with Nos 8-11 painted. Rear walls are of squared and coursed Portland stone or rubble. The roofs are slate or asbestos-cement slate, featuring a double ridge roof leading to a central valley. This is an unusually grand urban terrace.

The houses are three storeys high, each with two windows. They feature glazing-bar sash windows in reveals, with stone splayed flush lintels and central keystones. First-floor windows are 6-pane, possibly originally 12-pane, with some glazing bars missing from Nos 12 (ground and first floors) and 10 (ground floor). No. 11 has a wide tripartite sash window under a continuous lintel with a keystone. All doors are arched and paired to Nos 8 & 9 and 12 & 13, set within flush stone arches on impost blocks, and are recessed on two stone steps. Early panelled doors remain at Nos 8, 11 and 13. The exterior details include a small projecting stone plinth, a plain string course above the ground floor, and a stone moulded cornice stopped to kneelers on the skew. Most houses have two gable stacks.

At the rear, most houses have projecting gabled lower wings, with the first two (Nos 8 and 9) being deeper than the rest and featuring stone rear walls. Towards the north end of the terrace, some rubble is visible in the rear walls. Various glazing-bar sashes remain in the rear elevations. The interiors have not been inspected.
