Description
Devenish No.1 Malthouse is a former malt house that is now disused, dating from the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed of Portland stone ashlar, with some rubble, brickwork, rendering, and slate roofs. The building features long malting floors on two storeys, arranged in parallel ranges that are set back from the street, with the rear wall built into the rising ground.
The exterior includes a gabled two-storey range at the right-hand end, while the left-hand end has a return wing with two square kilns topped with steep-pitched conical roofs and tall central metal flues. There is also a lower wing with a hipped outer end, connected by a footbridge to the rear of the warehouse at No.7 Hope Street. The main maltings have seven windows, each with four panes over a timber panel, and wood lintels and sills. On the far left, next to the kilns, there is a flight of steps leading to a plank door at the upper level. The back wall is made of rubble, with the upper parts of the windows in brick dressings just visible above the raised ground level.
The gabled wing features a loading bay under a gabled hoist and a plank door accessed via a flight of concrete steps. The return wall is rendered. To the left, one kiln has a small six-pane casement window at the upper level, while the wing to the left has a rendered first floor with a loading bay, plank doors, and small lights, all with brick dressings and haunched segmental heads at the ground floor.
Inside, there are kiln drying floors, a flat-bottomed steep, and evidence of a couch frame. This building is a notable example of pre-railway era maltings in the local vernacular style and is part of an outstanding group of malthouses centered around the Hope Square area.
