Description

The Maltings is a malthouse that has been converted into commercial premises, likely built in the mid-19th century and altered since. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a wood shingle roof. The building is one storey high with a loft and has an internal layout of 6 by 11 bays. The gabled entrance on the north-east elevation includes various doors and windows with concrete lintels, one window with a soldier-brick arch, and a loft loading door that has been converted into a window. The gable has a half-hipped design with low eaves. There are two malt-kiln louvres topped with pyramidal metal caps, one of which is tall with battered wood-shingled sides. The rear of the building shows later brick patching on the left side, along with later doors and windows. The returns feature various small windows with vertical glazing bars and lapped glass, as well as other openings.

Inside, the front bay contains the two kilns, while the next three bays were originally floored but most of the flooring has been removed, leading to an unfloored section. The internal structure is notable for its complex timber framework, which includes posts, cross-beams, joists, tie-beams, longitudinal beams, and multi-directional straight braces. The joints are reinforced with metal straps and bolts, and there is a plank ridge-piece.

The Maltings is marked on the 1870 Ordnance Survey map, and the 1840 Alton Tithe Map indicates that a malthouse existed on this site, although it is unclear if it is the same structure that stands today.
