Description

A terrace of three houses built around 1808, located in Cove Street, Weymouth. The houses are rendered over brick, with the left gable exposed and unrendered, and they are topped with a wide-span slate mansard roof with half-hipped ends. They are two storeys and have an attic, with each house originally featuring a single window front. Numbers 1 and 2 have flat-roofed dormers containing six-pane sash windows, while number 3 has a raked dormer with a sash window. Original sixteen-pane sashes remain in number 2, and six-pane sashes are present at the ground floor of number 1; number 3 has six-pane sashes without horizontal bars. A two-light casement window has been inserted into a modified opening on the first floor of number 1. Each house has an arched doorway with plain reveals; the door to number 1 has been replaced and is topped with a stained-glass fanlight, while the fanlight of number 3 has been painted over. Brick stacks are positioned to the right of each house, and also visible on the rear slope. The interiors have not been inspected. These houses are representative of the small-scale dwellings common in Weymouth during this period, built on Corporation land according to a lease of 1807. Numbers 4 and 5 in Cove Street were built separately, although they share a similar appearance.
