Description

Hope Congregational Chapel is a Congregational chapel dated 1822, with an inscription on the facade, and re-erected in 1862. The building features a cream ashlar front, Portland rubble returns with brick dressings, a slate roof, and a brick rear wing at a higher level in Herbert Place. The front displays bold Mannerist classical details, including lofty arched lights with margin panes set in moulded architraves and square sills on mouldings, arranged in recessed panels. The outer arch moulding stops at the capitals of square piers, and there is a high plinth with a moulded offset. Flanking the entrance are pairs of 20th-century glazed doors set in small quarter-pilasters beneath a flat entablature, accompanied by a pair of sunk panels, all accessed by five broad stone steps with nosings. Below the central window is a stone panel inscribed with the dates. The heavy cornice rests on modillion brackets, topped by a blocking and coped parapet. To the left and right, slightly set back, are short lengths of ashlar wall with arched openings under an entablature. The long sides of the chapel have seven bays with lights to stone arches but brick jambs, featuring shallow buttresses at the weathered tops. At the rear, there is a two-storey red brick addition with ancillary rooms, dated 1885. The interior has been noted as having been remodelled in the mid-20th century.
