Description

Chilcombe Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse built in the late 18th century, incorporating windows from the 17th century. The building features coursed, dressed stone walls and an ashlar band for the plinth. It has a stone slab roof with stone gable copings and rendered brick stacks at each gable coping. The house is designed in a single-depth L-plan and is extended under a pent roof at the north end. It is notable for its height in relation to its depth, consisting of three storeys.

The front elevation has three windows, which are three-light with a central sash, while the outer lights are fixed with a horizontal glazing bar. These windows have moulded stone architraves, flat stone mullions, and stone cills. The first floor features two-light windows at the centre and on all second-floor windows. The central front door is framed by a similar stone architrave and has a fluted frieze with Neo-Classical oval paterae at the ends, topped with a moulded stone cornice. The door itself has four fielded panels and two top lights, dating from the 19th century.

At the north end is a range built around the early 19th century, with rubble stone walls and quoins, a large pentice slate roof with stone slab eaves, stone gable copings, and level kneelers. A tall stone stack is positioned halfway up the east coping. This section has two storeys and three windows made from re-used 17th-century materials, featuring two- and three-light hollow-chamfered stone mullions with separate labels above. There is a re-used doorway at the centre with large straight-chamfered jambs and a depressed-arch head, leading to a two-leaf plank door that is studded and fitted with strap hinges.
