Description
The Methodist Church and Hall, built in 1886 by architects Bucknell and Jennings, is an impressive structure made of Purbeck Stone with a slate roof, located on the south side of High Street. The main north front features a Flamboyant Gothic style, highlighted by a central entrance door with a flattened ogee arch, which is accessed by a flight of stone steps. Above the entrance is a large west window adorned with flowing tracery, and further up in the gable is a circular window. The gable parapet is decorated with crockets and pinnacles. To the east of the entrance, there is a square tower with octagonal upper storeys and a spire, rising from behind an ornamental parapet with pinnacles. The other windows on the main north front are either single or paired lights with elliptical heads and hood moulds, while the side elevation features plain lancet windows.
Adjacent to the church is the Hall and Sunday School, constructed in 1907, which shares a similar style and materials with the church. The buildings are set back from the street in a forecourt, enclosed by Purbeck Stone walls, complete with stone gate piers and simple iron gates. A stone set into the boundary wall is inscribed "Built 1807, enlarged 1842," likely referring to an earlier church that once occupied the site. This building is an important landmark in the street.
