Description
The boundary stone located at NGR SY 6446 7758 is a Grade II listed marker that serves as the boundary between the parishes of Abbotsbury and Portland. This stone predates 1788, the year when Robert Attwooll was paid half a guinea to carve the inscription. Made of Portland stone, it is the only parish boundary marker required for Portland, as Chesil Bank is the sole physical connection to the Dorset mainland. The traditional ceremony of 'Beating the Bounds' is still celebrated occasionally on Ascension Day.
