Description

Tudor Rose is a late medieval building located on Long Street, dating from 1625. It features a timber-framed structure with a two-storey rough ashlar front facing the street, and it is believed that the timber-framed part originally extended further east. The building has a new plaintile roof.

On the first floor, there are two four-light wood casement windows with lead glazing. The ground floor includes a five-light stone mullioned window with a hoodmould, and in the center, there is an early 19th-century shop front with a glazed door and a splayed bay that retains its glazing bars. Another door is located on the right side.

Inside, the building has moulded ceiling beams with carved bosses featuring Tudor Roses at the junctions, along with stone fireplaces. During restoration work in 1962, a mural of an unknown bishop, dating to around 1500, was uncovered on a ground floor timber-framed partition; this mural has since been restored and re-hung near its original location. Historically, this building was part of the Castle Tavern.

Tudor Rose is part of a group of buildings that includes premises occupied by Henry Durrant Antiques, Bernard of Mayfair, C M Hunt and Sons, St John's, a building adjoining St John's to the east, The China Gallery, and Child's Garage.
