Description

The War Memorial, dating from around 1920 and likely designed by Ponting, is located in the Gillingham High Street car park. It is constructed of stone and resembles a medieval market cross typical of Dorset, such as those found in Stalbridge. The memorial features two steps leading up to a square base, from which rises an octagonal shaft adorned with four applied, crocketted pinnacles. At the top, there is a crocketted head with panels that display carvings of the Crucifix, St George, and the Dragon, among other designs.
