Description
Antiqua Tat Antiques, located at No 8 on East Borough, is a Grade II listed building dating from 1823, designed by Sir Jeffry Wyattville. The building features rendered walls and a low-pitched slate roof with wide bracketed eaves. It consists of a three-storey main block, with a single-storey range that was formerly used as stables on the south side.
In a Grecian style, the building has projecting band courses at the first and second floor levels. The main elevation includes a door with a portico supported by Doric columns and an entablature, with modern glazed doors set in a recess. The ground floor has two three-light double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, while the first floor features three double-hung sash windows with glazing bars in raised moulded surrounds. The second floor has three similar, but smaller, windows.
On the north elevation, the ground floor has six double-hung sash windows with glazing bars in raised moulded surrounds, and the first and second floors each have four similar windows. At both ends of this facade, there are parallel recesses above the outer ground floor windows.
Internally, the main ground floor rooms boast good ornamental plaster cornices, while the first floor rooms have simpler details. The main staircase is adorned with 19th-century ornamental cast iron balusters, and there is a glass dome light above the stairwell, featuring slender glazing bars. This building is a notable example of early 19th-century architecture.
