Description
The Parish Church of St Cuthbert is a church built in 1862 by Slater, featuring ashlar stone walls and a clay-tile roof with gable ends and stone gable copings. The polygonal-ended chancel has a stone slate roof, and there is a stone bellcote on the west gable topped with a stone pyramidal roof. The church consists of a nave and chancel, both at a single storey height. The nave includes three coupled trefoil-headed windows, while the chancel has two single light trefoil-headed windows and one on each face of the apse. Architectural details include a plinth moulding, a string course under the windows, and cornice moulding.
There is a south porch to the nave, which is gabled with a stone slate roof, stone gable coping, and a cross at the apex. The entrance features a pointed arch with attached responds, capitals, and bases, as well as a pointed-arch entrance with roll moulding leading into the church, which has a plank door with strap hinges.
Inside, the pointed chancel arch consists of two orders with responds and carved foliated stone capitals. The nave roof has four bays of arch-braced collars supported by simply moulded stone corbels. Notable fittings include a round stone font with a foliate band and carved roundels on each side, supported by a short stem with polygonal sides and a moulded base, dating from the 19th century. The pulpit is also made of stone, circular in shape, adorned with a band of foliate ornament and a bead moulding around the rim, also from the 19th century.
