Description
Old Came Rectory is a former rectory that has been converted into a dwelling house, dating from the early 19th century. The building features cob and rubble stone walls that are rendered and painted, topped with a hipped thatch roof. There are brick stacks on the ridge at both the left and right ends, which were rebuilt in the 20th century. The house is two storeys high and has three windows on the front (southwest) elevation. The ground floor includes French windows with a lozenge pattern of glazing bars, while the remaining windows are two-light casements, also featuring a lozenge and elongated hexagonal pattern of glazing bars. The central front door has a rebuilt architrave with fluted pilasters and a plain entablature, with the door itself having two bottom panels and a pattern of marginal glazing bars from the 19th century.
There is a pentice-roofed verandah in thatch, originally supported entirely by wood, but now has rubble stone piers at the corners and at the main entrance, with three wooden posts in between. The southeast elevation also has French windows of the same design. The house has been extended at the rear by one room, which is two storeys high and maintains the same render and thatch style.
Inside, the layout features a central hall with a double depth plan of rooms. The doorway in the hall has a reeded architrave, bossed imposts, and a fanlight above, dating to the early 19th century. The staircase includes stick balusters and a mahogany handrail. Notably, the house was the residence of William Barnes, a scholar, poet, schoolmaster, and rector of Winterborne Came from 1862 to 1886, and he is buried in Came Churchyard.
