Description

The Star Public House is an early 19th century terrace of four buildings, originally built as a single unit, returning from Gloucester Street to Park Street. The building is rendered, with some exposed rubble, and has slate roofs. Number 18, The Star, has a slightly higher roof line and a long service range running back to Park Street.

The main façade has two storeys with an attic, featuring three flat-roofed dormers above an 8:12:8-pane sash bow oriel, a blind opening, and a large window with two transom panes and a 12-pane sash. To the right is a large window under a cornice and fascia board. A centrally placed arched entrance has a six-panel door and plain fanlight, with three steps leading up to it. The return gable has a blind window in the attic, above two 16-pane sashes and two large four-pane windows, an arched doorway, and a smaller two-light window at ground floor level. The lower gabled service range to Park Street has painted rubble, two sashes, a wide carriage entry with a segmental head, and a further sash. The rear elevation is of rubble construction with brick dressings, and features 16-pane sashes. The building has two ridge stacks. A small plinth, moulded cornice, blocking course, and parapet run along the full width of the terrace.

Numbers 19 to 21 each have one window, with a small flat-roofed dormer. Number 19 has a large 3-light window, an 8:12:8-pane bow oriel, while numbers 20 and 21 have a canted plain sash oriel. A small window has been inserted to the right of the bay window on number 20. At ground floor are a four-pane sash and panelled door to transom light on number 19, a wide shop front plus door to transom light on number 20, and a full-width shop front with door on number 21. The rear has a large dormer on number 19, and an early two-light casement with leading to number 21. The interior has not been inspected. The building is isolated, with car parks to the front and one side.
