Description

Lower Lewell Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, substantially rebuilt and enlarged in the early 18th century. It is constructed of squared rubble walls and brick walls. The roof is tiled with clay and stone slates, with rendered and brick stacks at the outer gables and at the inner north gable. The original plan comprised a main range and a small wing to the southeast. An 18th-century extension, built in Flemish bond brickwork with vitrified headers, was added to the north, creating a new kitchen on the ground floor. The original part of the house was remodelled, incorporating a new staircase within a central entrance hall. A porch was also added at a later date.

The original elevation has two storeys and attics. It features an irregular arrangement of three windows; from north to south, these include a sash window with a timber lintel, a blocked doorway with a cambered brick arch, sashes with glazing bars, and a gabled porch. A 20th-century French window is set within a 17th-century stone frame with a returned label. The 18th-century brick porch, located to the right of centre, has a gabled slate roof and moulded stone kneelers, leading to a 20th-century plank and muntin door with a fan light above.

Internally, the roof is supported by tie and collar beam trusses. The north extension features a plank door near an adjoining wall, and a two-light wood casement window with glazing bars to the first floor. The farmhouse is part of a group including a dairy house, barn, and cottages, forming a close-knit farmstead.
