Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Michael and St George, along with its presbytery, is a Grade II* listed building located on Silver Street. The foundation stone was laid in 1835, and the church is designed in a Gothic style. It features a nave and chancel, an octagonal belfry, and is rendered with Ham stone dressings. The nave consists of three bays, each containing a single-light lancet window flanked by buttresses. The entrance is located at the north-east facing end, which is gabled and has octagonal buttresses on square bases. Above the gabled porch, there is a three-light lancet window and a rose window.
Inside, the church has a chancel arch and a low altar screen with a pointed arch made of stone, along with a fine painted and gilded reredos. The belfry tower is connected to the north-west side of the chancel and includes a small octagonal room at the base with lancet-headed niches, some of which have been opened up to form windows and doors. The exterior of the belfry tower features a tall single-light window with a trefoil opening above on the north-east facing side, topped by an octagonal spire.
The presbytery, located to the north-west, is a two-storey building with a gabled porch that has a cusped bargeboard on the left side. This porch incorporates a wide pointed fanlight with tracery and has an initialled plaque above it, along with a single-light ogee window. At the right end of the presbytery, there is a wide gabled bay that projects forward and contains a three-light casement window on both the first and ground floors.
The church and presbytery are part of a group that includes The Little Place, the north-east boundary wall, Rosehill and its garden wall, Burley, the Old Vicarage, the former stable block and garden wall to Burley and the Old Vicarage, West Hill and its garden wall, along with the Dorset Hotel on Pound Road.
