Description
The remains of Shaftesbury Abbey are located adjacent to Park Wall and date back to 1655. The site features excavated foundations of most of the Abbey Church. Numerous remains have been uncovered, including bones believed to belong to King Edward the Martyr, to whom the Abbey was dedicated. Shaftesbury Abbey was a Benedictine Nunnery, founded by Alfred in 888, with his daughter serving as the first Abbess.
