Description

East Hill House and Magnolia House are a small villa, originally one dwelling but now two, dating from the mid-18th century and significantly altered in the early 19th century. The building has brick and rubble stone walls, some of which are stuccoed and painted, with a moulded string course and a low parapet. It has a slate, hipped roof and stacks at the hip ends. The house is two storeys with cellars and attics and has three windows to the front, with sash windows containing marginal glazing bars typical of the 19th century. The front door is in the centre and consists of two flush-panelled leaves with four top lights and a rectangular fanlight above, set within a moulded architrave and entablature. A trelliswork verandah is present. A mid-19th century two-storey bow window is on the west end wall, with sashes containing marginal glazing bars. A round-headed window was inserted in the 20th century to the first-floor corridor. A later 19th-century addition is at the north-west, originally gabled, but now has a raised flat parapet.

Inside, the front hall has a staircase with two right-angle landings, stick balusters, and a ramped handrail. There is an oval gallery to the second-floor landing, and an oval lantern dome is above. Magnolia House is attached to the east end; this was a later 19th-century extension to East Hill House, constructed of yellow brick with a hipped slate roof. It is two storeys high and has one window with sash windows lacking glazing bars. Access is at the rear via a 19th-century panelled door and a 20th-century extension.
