Description

The Chickerell War Memorial is a memorial dedicated to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It was erected in 1919, with the names of those who died in the Second World War added after 1945.

Constructed from Portland stone ashlar, the memorial is located in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, near the center of Chickerell, facing south and positioned to the south of the Grade I listed medieval church. The memorial features a St Chad’s cross atop a moulded tapering shaft approximately 1.5 meters high. This shaft is mounted on a moulded and corniced square plinth, which has a shield set into a recessed panel on each side. The plinth rests on a three-tier stepped square base, which together stands about 1.2 meters high.

The front of the plinth bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AS A THANK-OFFERING FOR/ PEACE AFTER THE GREAT WAR/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ A SACRIFICE TO FREEDOM AND/ JUSTICE THE PARISHIONERS OF/ CHICKERELL ERECTED THIS/ MONUMENT NOV 2 1919," followed by the words: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR/ HIS FRIENDS. ST JOHN XV." The other sides of the plinth are inscribed with 24 names, which include the regiment or service branch of each individual. On the middle step of the base, there is an inscription that reads: "ALSO IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND GREAT WAR 1939-1945/ THE FOLLOWING NAMES ARE INSCRIBED," with 18 names listed on the lower step beneath it. The memorial is set on a concrete foundation.
